## Tournament Schedule and Structure

**Key Dates**

* Registration open: November 15, Friday
* Weekend Qualifiers: November 23-24 and November 30 - December 1, 2024
* Regional Finals: December 7-8, 2024 ([four regional finals across major time zones](/echess-rulesets/the-road-to-al-ain-rule-set/regional-finals-time-table.md))

**Tournament Format**

* **Stage 1** - Online Qualifiers: A Swiss-format tournament (9 rounds) will advance four players per event in the Under 2000 and Under 2300 divisions, and the top eight players in the Open division, to the Regional Finals.
* **Stage 2** - [Regional Finals](/echess-rulesets/the-road-to-al-ain-rule-set/regional-finals-time-table.md): Each zone—AO (Asia and Oceania), EAS (Europe and Southern Africa), MENTA (Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey), and AM (Americas)—will host a single-elimination head-to-head KO tournament. A total of 64 players (8 from the Under 2000, 8 from the Under 2300, and 16 from the Open division) from each zone will compete, with the top player from each region ultimately advancing to the Grand Final. This structure ensures one finalist from each of the four time-zone regions.
* **Stage 3 -** Grand Final: The four regional champions will compete in a Double Elimination format to crown the tournament champion in Al Ain, battling head-to-head for the title and a share of the additional $25,000 USD prize pool.

## Grand Final Format

The Grand Final on December 22 will showcase a fast-paced double-elimination showdown among the four regional champions at the Danat Al Ain Resort.

This exciting 4-player double-elimination tournament format is designed to test players’ strategic depth and adaptability across a progressive range of time controls. The tournament will crown a champion after a series of intense matches, with cascading time controls to escalate the competitive pressure as the event advances.

Participants will contend for USDC$25,000 prize pool while experiencing the cultural richness of Al Ain, one of the UAE’s oldest and most cherished cities. Flights and accommodation are covered by the Al Ain Chess and Mind Games Club.

**Format Overview**

* **Structure**: Double Elimination Knockout
* **Participants**: 4 regional champions
* **Goal**: The last player standing after all rounds is crowned the champion. If the finalist from the Winner’s Bracket loses in the Grand Final, a reset match will determine the ultimate winner.
* **Game Format**: Each match is a best-of-2 games, with the champion determined based on match outcomes in both brackets.

**Time Control Progression**

To create variety and increase intensity, each stage of the tournament features a specific time control:

1. **Initial Round**: 10+0 – 10 minutes per player, no increment. This slower time control allows players to start strategically, emphasizing calculation and depth.
2. **Loser’s Bracket Initial Round & Winner’s Bracket Final**: 5+3 – 5 minutes per player with a 3-second increment. The faster pace adds intensity, requiring players to balance speed and precision.
3. **Loser’s Bracket Final & Grand Final**: 3+2 – 3 minutes per player with a 2-second increment. The shortest time control pushes players to their limits, making the final rounds high-stakes and action-packed.

**Time Controls by Stage**

| Stage                                | Match                                                                          | Time Control | Format          |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------ | --------------- |
| **Initial Round (Winner’s Bracket)** | Match 1 (Player A vs. Player B)                                                | 10+0         | Best of 2 games |
|                                      | Match 2 (Player C vs. Player D)                                                | 10+0         | Best of 2 games |
| **Loser’s Bracket Initial Round**    | Match 3 (Loser of Match 1 vs. Loser of Match 2)                                | 5+3          | Best of 2 games |
| **Winner’s Bracket Final**           | Match 4 (Winner of Match 1 vs. Winner of Match 2)                              | 5+3          | Best of 2 games |
| **Loser’s Bracket Final**            | Match 5 (Winner of Loser’s Bracket Round vs. Loser of Winner’s Bracket Final)  | 3+2          | Best of 2 games |
| **Grand Final** | Match 6 (Winner of Winner’s Bracket Final vs. Winner of Loser’s Bracket Final) | 3+2 | Best of 2 games |
|                                      | **Redemption Match** (if needed)                                               | 3+2          | Best of 2 games |

**Advancement and Tiebreaks**

* **Double Elimination**: Each player must lose twice to be eliminated, ensuring that every player gets at least two chances to advance.
* **Redemption Match**: If the finalist from the Winner’s Bracket loses in the Grand Final, a reset match (3+2) will determine the champion. This rule gives a fair chance to both finalists and adds suspense to the final showdown.
